Asaya Chavez was in his room playing his video game when he smelled something that didn’t smell like grandmama’s cooking. So, the lil’ fella got up and ran to his grandmamma, Anna Jaramillo, and told her what was going on. “…I went to my grandma, and said, ‘I smell smoke get out,’” is what Karla Sosa of KRQE NEWS quoted the lil’ fella as saying.
Grandmother got up and she and the lil’ fella got the children out of the house. After they all got outside, lil’ Asaysa and grandmother did a head count in order to make sure that everyone was indeed out of the house. During the head count, they noticed that there were two children missing. Lil’ Asaysa sprinted back, not once but twice, into the house.
Soon after he made it back inside, lil’ Asaysa found his infant and toddler cousins. He swooped the infant up into his arms and ran outside. Then he went back in and swooped the toddler up into his arms and ran outside. Phew, a sigh of relief is what everyone breathed.
Sure...the house, the car the family recently bought for grandmother, and lil’ Asaya’s pet turtle are all gone. However, the loss of the material things and the poor lil’ ol’ turtle pale in comparison to the lives that would have been loss if it weren’t for lil’ Asaya’s quick thinking; which grandmother credits the school fire drills for. “I’m just happy they’re okay because they never got to see the world, you know, so I’m just happy they’re ok. I’m just happy they’re alive,” is what Karla Sosa of KRQE NEWS quoted the lil’ fella as saying.
Life is a blessing!
